Vi Redd: three essential albums

Lady Soul (1963)

One of her earliest recordings as a bandleader, this album showcases the depth of her musical soul. With a mix of jazz standards and original compositions, the record highlights her blues-drenched saxophone phrasing and charismatic voice.

Here we have We’ll be together again (Carl T. Fischer, Frankie Laine):

Bird Call (1962):

This album features a tribute to Vi’s great inspiration, Charlie Parker. The repertoire blends classic bebop pieces with her unique touch. Her renditions, such as Now’s the Time, demonstrate her ability to reinterpret Parker’s music with a freshness that is both respectful and innovative.

Let’s listen to Now’s the Time (Charlie Parker):

Now’s the Time (1977)

Featuring Marian McPartland (piano), Mary Osborne (guitar), Lynn Milano (bass), and Dottie Dodgion (drums), this album is remarkable not only for the musicians’ extraordinary talent but also for being a true all-female bop session. Wow!

I recommend listening to In a Mellow Tone (Duke Ellington):
