Come Rain or Come Shine is jazz standard with music by Harold Arlen and lyrics by Johnny Mercer. It was written for the Broadway musical St. Louis Woman, which opened on March 30, 1946. It’s interesting to note that this piece is one in a series of enduring songs with meteorological themes that Arlen composed through the course of his career, including Stormy weather (1933), I’ll wind (1934), Over the Rainbow (1939), When the Sun Comes Out (1941), and I Never Has Seen Snow (1954). But, apart from this curious detail, I would like to focus on the most remarkable female versions: Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Judy Garland, Diane Schuur, and Peggy Lee – whose rendition is featured in the album I’m a Woman.
This album also includes the song I’m a Woman, which I performed with the Bologna-based guitarist Manu Napolitano and that you can find through my videos here.
